David Bowie Brochure

This project started while I was taking my typography class. The idea was to take a celebrity, historic person, etc. and create a portrait using words that describe the celebrity and I chose David Bowie. First, we had to figure out what what text we were going to use for our image and after figuring out which album to take inspiration from (Hunky Dory) and some research, I found that the text used for the Hunky Dory album was called Zipper STD. During this course, there was a lot of things to figure out because I was just introduced to the world of typography, had no idea what tools were to be used, and an instructor that wasn’t really helpful. It was great practice for studying and finding good resources to help me learn these techniques where the instructor failed and provided the same techniques but a week after those techniques would have been helpful for our projects. It was also a good lesson in time management for me in between working full time and schooling. However, even though I was getting better with my time management, I still pulled an all nighter to get the typography part of the image done, which was created in Adobe InDesign. I can undeniably say that this was the hardest project I had ever come across before applying it to a graphic design item. After layout out the image, I exported it into Photoshop to apply the grunge look and color which was inspired by the playlist found on the Hunky Dory record album which looks handwritten. With the suggestion from my instructor in my final semester to have the image be incorporated into an invitation for the celebrity, I decided to create a brochure for an exhibition to celebrate his life. I chose a font choice that complimented the type used within the image and easy to read because it held important information like the date, title, location, and where to buy tickets. With the first attempt, once I placed it on the mock up, the edges were cut off so in the redo, I kept this in mind and created the boarder you see now. This decision gave it a cleaner finish.
